I began reading Wodehouse's "Blandings Castle" novels years ago in lovely English Folio Society editions, and while on a recent overseas trip I thought it would be good entertainment to read them again in ebook (Kindle) editions. In my view Wodehouse is one of the finest stylistic authors of the 20th Century While his characters might be considered as great comic characters (as they are), what makes them stand out -- and even more enjoyable and memorable for me -- is that they also come across as real flesh-and-blood people that one gets quite attached to. "Heavy Weather" however is not perhaps a recommended starting point for reading the "Blandings Castle" series. Its various inhabitants first appear in "Something New" followed by "Leave It To Psmith" and "Summer Lightening." The Folio Society multi-volume edition however begins with "Summer Lightening," and that would be quite all right to begin with, as it shares specific plot elements with "Heavy Weather." If one's only prior reading experiences of Wodehouse are the (wonderful) Jeeves and Wooster books, I consider the Blandings books even better (if that were possible!).Product details

Excellent sound fidelity; perfectly dramatized; JEEVES & THE FEUDAL SPIRIT is one of P.G.Wodehouse's best. Performed with the bounce and vigor of which only the BBC is capable. This is the first of Bertie's light-hearted imbroglios, from which he's disentangled at the eleventh hour by Jeeves, that quintesscense of superior valets. Wonderful, humorous relief from whatever ail you! The setting is upper class England of 1920's vintage. One must relax judgement on tobacco and alcohol in order to rollick in true appreciation. The only "objectionable" word is "damned", employed but once, in reference to a mustache.
I got the book on time and new, just as ordered. I love reading Wodehouse, appreciate his humor a lot. But I guess, just as with anything else pretty much, you gotta read a book by Wodehouse to find out if that's something you enjoy or not. Tastes differ.
Were he not so much fun, I'd curse the day I heard of PG Wodehouse because the reading of his books has the force of addiction for me. I've scarcely gone a day in the last year and a half without reading a few pages of Wodehouse. I'm particularly fond of the Blandings stories and this one is one of the best. It is either the sequel or prequel to Summer Lightening. In the inimitable style of the addled Lord Emsworth, I can't recall which, nor can I be bothered to figure out for you, dear reader. Get them both as they are equally wonderful.
I'm a huge fan of Bruce Sterling, but this book in particular is one of my favorites. Bruce is throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks here...the world is a fascinating extrapolation of our own. It doesn't *always* work, but where it does, he nails it even the second and third order effects of technology, IMO. And giving us a glimpse of that is one of the most valuable things a sf author can do. I love this book, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
P.G. Wodehouse books are so good I am not sure they need my support in the way of a review. But I shall try, without giving too much away. As you can tell from the title of my tiny review, my form of worship towards the book series, Bertie tries to grow a moustache on his upper lip. And Jeeves, being a man of good taste and gentle thoughts, finds it horrible.
Of course it is more complex than that. There is the beefy Stilton Cheesewright who wishes to break Wooster into parts for taking away his future wife. By accident, of course, but still a threat to either his life or his future happiness.
Also, in the mix, is his Aunt Dahlia is trying to sell the magazine Milady's Boudoir, which has become a money pit. Then there is another threat to Aunt Dahlia's happiness - I will just say two words - Chef Anatole.
Enough said. Enjoy!
Yet another gem in the P. G. Wodehouse collection! Never was I starved for a laugh, in want of a colorful or clever sentence or paragraph, or feeling even for a moment a dip in the entertainment value this book, like all of his I have read so far, offered page after page. I HIGHLY recommend this literary master and amazingly skilled (and clean) humorist to anyone and everyone, and I can't wait to jump into my next P. G. Wodehouse masterpiece!
